Painted in 1958 this painting referred to the Virgin Fields campaigns when Stalin settled millions of Russians in new territories to try and develop more land. Malaev was a successful Soviet painter of the 1930's to the 1950's and painted several well known Socialist Realism paintings such as Planes are Flying, 1950, and Virgin soil upturned, 1954.
