Arkadi Plastov is the most important Russian artist at the mid point of the 20th century.  He is credited with reintroducing the impressionist style back into Russian painting.  This photograph was taken at one of the numerous exhibitions devoted to Plastov that are held in Moscow.  'Tractor Drivers' shows two women stripping off after a hard mornings work driving the tractor in the background and about to plunge into a cooling and refreshing stream.  At the time the painting was painted in the 1940's most of the men of active ability were in the Russian army fighting in  the war and much of the manual labour was done by women.  Needless to say, this famous painting is much admired in Russia and can be enjoyed on many levels.
